How mxds works

What you can do in each part of the app, and what you cannot do yet. Start with a tour of the window.

Getting started

Install and first launchWhat mxds needs, how to install it, the Welcome screen, and how a project folder works.A tour of the windowThe parts of the mxds window, what each one is for, and how to open it from the keyboard.Keyboard shortcutsThe shortcuts you will use every day, grouped by where they work.

Databases

Connecting a databaseAdd a connection, test it, reach it through an SSH tunnel, and keep your connections in order in the Databases panel.Supported databasesThe thirteen databases mxds connects to, how each one signs in, and what each one cannot do yet.Importing filesLoad CSV, TSV, Parquet, JSON and Excel files into the built-in database, and open SQLite and DuckDB files as connections.

SQL and results

Writing SQLCompletion, formatting, lint and quick fixes, jumping to a CTE, GitHub Copilot suggestions, and how query tabs are saved.Running queriesWhat Run executes, how a tab picks its database, stopping a query, and where results and errors appear.Reading resultsThe results table — column summaries, sorting, filters and search, pinned columns, selecting and copying cells, pages, export and the Log tab.ChartsTurning a query result into a chart on the Chart tab, the options it has, and saving it as an image.Exporting resultsSave a result as CSV, TSV, JSON, SQL, Parquet or Excel, all of it or one page.Query historyEvery query you and your agents run, searchable by text and by table, with starred queries kept for good.Table docsThe Schema panel shows what is known about the table you are looking at — its description, size, columns, dbt model, notes and the queries that use it.

Notebooks

Jupyter notebooksOpening .ipynb files, choosing a kernel, working in command and edit mode, running cells, outputs, the variable inspector and saving.SQL cellsQuerying your databases from a notebook with %%sql cells, choosing the connection, and passing Python values into the query.

dbt

dbt projectsHow mxds finds a dbt project, which profile, target and dbt it uses, and what the editor knows about your models.Preview and build modelsPreview a dbt model on its target, read the SQL it compiled to, and run dbt build from the editor.LineageThe dbt project's dependency graph — around the open model, for a schema, or for what a run will touch — with node details and export.

Agents

The terminalThe built-in terminal where your agents run, with tabs and splits, shells that survive quitting, suggestions from your history and comments on output.Agents in the terminalRun Claude Code, Codex, opencode or any command-line agent in mxds, see what each one is doing, and let agents open panes and message each other. The Agents panel and chat historyEvery agent running in your terminal at a glance, and your past Claude Code, Codex and opencode chats for this project, ready to resume.Reviewing an agent's workComment on a document or on terminal output and hand the notes to the agent, then check its edits in the git view. The mxds CLIThe mxds command gives agents and scripts in your shell the same control over the app that MCP does, with compact text output.Recall: RAG inside your IDEA knowledge base for each project that your agents fill as they work and search before they touch your data.MCPConnect Claude Code, Codex, the Claude app or any other MCP client to mxds, and what an agent can do through it.Plan limits and caffeineThe status-bar gauges for your Claude and Codex plan limits, and the switch that keeps your Mac awake while agents work.

Git

Git changesReview your uncommitted changes, undo parts of them, commit, sync with the remote, switch branches and read the history.Pull requestsRead and review the repository's GitHub pull requests and GitLab merge requests in the git view, through your own gh and glab.

Workspace

FilesThe Files panel shows the project folder, opens files in the right kind of tab, and loads data files with a double-click.Command paletteOne search box for files, tables, text in files, past queries and every action in the app.Usage dashboardA one-screen summary of the queries you and your agents ran, how they went, and when you work.Settings and privacyThe Settings window, themes, and what mxds sends about your use of it and how to turn each part off.
